François-Rupert CARABIN (1862–1932)
Woman with a Gourd
Covered ceramic vessel

This covered ceramic vessel is a striking example of the distinctive aesthetic of François-Rupert Carabin, a major figure of the Art Nouveau movement, whose work boldly explores the relationship between the human body and the organic world. Fully modelled, the piece is enlivened by a high-relief decoration depicting a nude woman entwined around a voluminous gourd, forming a sensuous interlacing of full, continuous forms.

The deep green glaze, subtly enhanced with reddish-brown runs, reinforces the living, tactile quality of the composition, while the supple modelling of the volumes attests to the artist’s sculptural mastery. The female body appears to merge with the vegetal form in a poetic metamorphosis, in which the utilitarian function of the object gives way to a symbolic and decorative vision characteristic of Carabin’s work.

Situated at the crossroads of sculpture and the decorative arts, this piece reflects the artist’s fascination with naturalistic and sensual forms, as well as his rejection of traditional hierarchies between fine and applied art.
