LION Eugène
LION Eugène
Born into a long lineage of potters from Puisaye — a French region renowned for its ceramic tradition — Eugène Lion grew up surrounded by clay and fire. From an early age, he displayed exceptional talent for modeling and glazing, later refined under the decisive influence of Jean Carriès. Encouraged by this pioneering artist, Lion developed a distinctive personal style characterized by organic forms and iridescent glazes, combining expressive freedom with technical mastery.
His abundant and varied body of work — including vases, dishes, sculptures, and utilitarian objects — embodies a rare synthesis of art and craftsmanship. Long overlooked, his creations are now recognized for their crucial role in the prominence of Puisaye ceramics. A key figure of the Carriès school, Eugène Lion remains a source of inspiration for contemporary ceramists, symbolizing a harmonious dialogue between tradition and modernity.
