These single-celled creatures build extraordinary calcium carbonate skeletons. Like corals and molluscs, they regulate the concentration of CO2 in the oceans and atmosphere, and the planet’s overall carbon cycle. Predominant in the Atlantic, coccolithophores are sometimes so abundant that they are visible on satellite images.
