This stool was part of the Milton & Frieda Rosenthal collection, NY. They might have acquired it during the Parke-Bernet auction of the H. Rubinstein estate in 1966. Although not listed in the auction items, the stool is clearly visible in Sotheby’s November 2008 catalog on one of the early pages, where two shelves from the Rosenthal’s living room are reproduced. The stool is displayed on the lower shelf but was not included in the Sotheby’s auction.

The stool is also featured in the article «De l’authenticité des sculptures africaines» (The Authenticity of African Sculptures), published in Arts d’Afrique Noir, No. 12, December 1974, by Henri Kamer. Henri Kamer was among the consultants for the Parke-Bernet auction in 1966, and therefore, he was familiar with the stool.

It is likely from the workshop of Sikiré Kambiré.
